Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Review: Small Phone, Big Compromises
The pitch for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is simple: a phone that folds to the size of a powder compact, opens to a 6.7-inch screen, and looks unlike anything else in a jacket pocket. Samsung released it in July 2024 at $1,099. After four weeks of carrying it – in jeans, jackets, and the kind of small bags where a standard phone requires deliberate arrangement – the form factor delivers on the pocketability promise. The camera and battery are the price you pay. Last updated: May 2026.
Verdict: 7.5/10. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the best clamshell foldable available and the most genuinely pocketable full-size phone on the market. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is fast, the larger cover screen is more useful than previous Flip models, and the form factor delivers a distinct practical advantage. Three things to know: the battery at 4,000mAh delivers only 8 to 9 hours of unfolded use; the camera has no telephoto lens; and $1,099 buys you the Galaxy S25+ with better specs in every category except portability.
Design
Folded: 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9mm. Unfolded: 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9mm, 187 grams. The folded dimensions make the Flip 6 genuinely jacket-pocket portable in a way that no candy-bar phone is – a 6.7-inch phone folded to a 85mm length is simply smaller. Aluminium frame (not titanium, unlike the Z Fold 6), Gorilla Glass Victus Plus front and back. Twelve colour options, with several exclusive to Samsung’s website. IP48 rating. The cover screen increased from 3.4 inches on the Z Flip 5 to 3.4 inches on the Z Flip 6 – an unchanged size but with improved software integration and more useful widget support.

Display
The 6.7-inch inner display at 120Hz is smooth and bright (2,600 nits peak). The crease runs horizontally across the middle of the inner display – more visible than the Z Fold 6’s vertical crease because the Flip’s horizontal crease crosses the centre of content you are reading. After two weeks, your eye adjusts, but the crease is more intrusive than on the Z Fold 6 in practice. The cover display at 3.4 inches shows notifications, widgets, and camera controls. Running full apps on the cover screen requires accessing the Flex Window mode; most standard apps run in a condensed format.
Performance
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 12GB RAM – the same chip as the Z Fold 6. Performance in the folded-phone use case (apps, social media, calls) is excellent with no hesitation. Gaming on the inner display at 120Hz is smooth at medium to high settings; maximum settings in demanding 3D titles show frame drops that the Snapdragon 8 Elite in the S25 avoids. The 4,000mAh battery constrains gaming sessions more than the chip does.
Camera
50MP main (f/1.8) and 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2) – no telephoto. The dual-camera setup is the same limitation as the standard Galaxy S25. The Z Flip 6’s main camera upgrade over the Z Flip 5 is OIS, which reduces blur in handheld shots in lower light. Flex mode camera: fold the phone to 90 degrees and place it on a surface for hands-free Flex camera use – useful for group shots and video calls without a tripod. In daylight, photos are good; in low light, they are acceptable. The lack of a telephoto limits the camera’s versatility significantly for a $1,099 phone.
Software
Android 14 at launch, updated to Android 15 with One UI 7. Seven-year update commitment. Galaxy AI features including Circle to Search are present. The cover screen widget system improved in One UI 7 – more apps support condensed cover-screen widgets, making it useful for weather, calendar, and music controls without unfolding the phone.
Battery
4,000mAh in a phone with two displays and a folding mechanism. Battery life averaged 8 to 9 hours of mixed screen-on time, which is below average for a $1,099 phone. Days with extended video streaming or gaming dropped to 7 hours. Charging: 25W wired (0% to 80% in 44 minutes). 15W wireless.
Audio
Stereo speakers in the inner display. When folded and playing audio from the cover speaker configuration, sound quality drops noticeably – the cover screen’s speaker is mono. Unfolded stereo is adequate for video and calls. Dolby Atmos.
Connectivity
5G (sub-6GHz), Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC. No mmWave 5G in most markets. USB-C at USB 2 speeds. IP48 water resistance.
Price and Value
$1,099 for 256GB, $1,219 for 512GB. At $1,099, the Z Flip 6 costs $100 more than the Galaxy S25+ and $300 more than the standard Galaxy S25. Both non-foldable alternatives have better cameras, better battery life, and faster charging for less money. The Z Flip 6’s premium pays exclusively for the foldable form factor. If pocketability is a genuine daily priority, that premium may be earned. If not, the S25+ at $999 is a significantly better specification at a lower price.

- Flex camera and Flex mode for hands-free use
- 7-year update commitment
Cons

- $1,099 buys a better-spec’d Galaxy S25+ in the traditional form factor
Who It Is For
The Z Flip 6 is for buyers who specifically value a compact folded phone that fits in small pockets and bags without compromise. It is also a strong choice for anyone who finds large candy-bar phones uncomfortable to carry and wants a 6.7-inch screen when using the phone but a compact form when it is not in use.
Alternatives
Samsung Galaxy S25+ ($999): $100 less, better camera, better battery, same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 performance. The right choice if the foldable form factor is not a requirement.
Motorola Razr 50 Ultra (approx $999): Larger 4-inch cover screen, same Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, $100 cheaper. A genuine Z Flip 6 competitor worth comparing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How durable is the Galaxy Z Flip 6 hinge?
Samsung rates the hinge for 200,000 folds. At 100 folds per day, that is five years of durability. Real-world reports from Z Flip 4 and 5 users suggest hinges that have not shown mechanical issues through two to three years of daily use.
Can you run apps on the Z Flip 6 cover screen?
Yes, via Flex Window mode in One UI 7. Not all apps support condensed cover-screen display; Samsung apps and many major third-party apps do. The cover screen is most useful for notifications, media controls, and quick replies rather than full app navigation.
